New Delhi| The central government is working to expand the testing capacity to one lakh tests per day within the next few days, said Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan today.
Through video conferencing, the minister was interacting with Lions Club International members
288 national labs are working along with 97 private lab chains with around 16,000 sample collection centres and testing about 60,000 tests per day, Dr Harsh Vardhan informed.
Since the last three days, the doubling rate is 11.3 days in the country he said. Health Minister further added that although the global mortality rate is around 7%, India is having a mortality rate of around 3%, and around 86% of casualty of persons with co-morbidity.

The Minister said only 0.33% of patients are on ventilators, 1.5% are on oxygen support and 2.34% patients are in ICU. This reflects the quality of care being given across the nation, Vardhan added.
The Minister appreciated Lions Club members for their participation in the battle against the novel coronavirus particularly through PM CARES donation, equipment, sanitizers food, PPE kits and N95 masks for hospitals.
India has strongly tackled public health emergencies of international concern and pandemics in the past as well, health Minister said. Adding that India has the essential national core capabilities specified in the International Health Regulations to manage public health emergencies.
