Overnight Heavy Rains Batter Mumbai, Two Incidents of Wall Collapse Reported

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said the landslide following heavy Rains caused a wall to fall on some slum dwellings in the Bharat Nagar area of ​​Chembur.


The overnight heavy rains have left a trail of destruction in several parts of Mumbai. The economic capital of the country has once again witnessed the havoc of heavy rains leading to two separate incidents of wall collapse. In the first incident, a wall collapsed on some slum houses in the Chembur Bharat Nagar area after the city was battered by heavy rains killing about a dozen people. Meanwhile, in the second incident, three people were killed when a residential house collapsed in Vikhroli area. At present rescue operation is going on in both the places.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) says the landslide caused a wall to fall on some slum dwellings in the Bharat Nagar area of ​​Chembur. It is believed that there may be more trapped under the rubble. NDRF inspector Rahul Raghuvansh said that his team has recovered two bodies from the wreckage. Locals had recovered 10 bodies before the arrival of NDRF personnel. At least 7 more people are feared to be trapped.

On the other hand, BMC said a Ground Plus One residential building collapsed early Sunday in Mumbai’s Vikhroli area, killing three people.

Incessant rains with heavy showers and lightening continues throughout Saturday night creating a flood-like situation in the maximum city. From the streets to the railway tracks, there is waterlogging and in some areas people had to make their way through knee-deep water. Due to torrential rains, water has entered in people’s homes in Kandivali’s Hanuman Nagar area.
