Personal Sanitization Enclosure In AIIMS Set Up By DRDO Shut Down After Skin Irritation Cases Among Users

“We have provided enough scientific material on how it is ineffective. Maybe they installed it since the DRDO is a big name and they couldn’t deny,” Dr. Srinivas told HW News.

New Delhi| The personal sanitization enclosure set up by DRDO in AIIMS, Delhi has now been shut down after a couple of users complained of skin irritation.

Dr. Srinivas Rajkumar T, the General Secretary of Residents Doctor Association of AIIMS, told HW News, “The facility was set up based on the popular opinion that sodium hypochlorite may decrease the viral load of people coming in. But it was found that it was ineffective and was causing skin irritation to users.”

He also stressed the WHO guidelines that there is no evidence about the efficacy of sodium hypochlorite used for disinfection in coronavirus cases. He also referred to the order by the Director of Public Health and Preventive Medicine in Tamil Nadu banning the use of disinfectant tunnels.

Dr. Srinivas further added, “This type of practices result in people ignoring the other important measures of personal hygiene such as using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, washing hands and wearing masks. It is important that people follow effective precautions rather than following such populist measures.”

“The problem is AIIMS set up a wrong example for the rest of the country to follow by installing the facility. We have provided enough scientific material on how it is ineffective. Maybe they installed it since the DRDO is a big name and they couldn’t deny,” Dr. Srinivas told HW News.

There have been continuous attempts to find solutions that can protect people from the infection of the delay virus. Though, not every solution seems to work. The disinfection tunnels using sodium hypochlorite are ineffective in protecting people from the infection of the Covid-19 and experts suggest that people should follow effective measures such as using alcohol-based sanitizers, wearing masks and washing hands.

India has seen a constant spike in coronavirus cases. Though the doubling rate of cases in India is comparatively low than the other countries, India has crossed 9000 cases on Monday.
