PM Modi leaves for Thailand, set to attend ASEAN, East Asia and RCEP summit

According to the Foreign Ministry, Modi will attend the ASEAN-India summit on Sunday. Modi was invited by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

 

New Delhi| Prime Minister Narendra Modi left for a three-day visit to Thailand on Saturday. During this time, the Prime Minister will attend the ASEAN-India, East Asia and Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Summit. The External Affairs Ministry said that on the first day of Thailand visit, the Prime Minister will address the Indian people. He will also issue a coin on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak. PM Modi will also release the Thai translation of Tamil texts Thirukkural.

According to the Foreign Ministry, Modi will attend the ASEAN-India summit on Sunday. Modi was invited by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to attend the ASEAN Summit. Foreign Secretary Vijay Singh Thakur had said that the ASEAN-related summit is part of our diplomatic calendar. It will be PM Modi’s seventh ASEAN-India Summit and the Sixth East Asia Summit.

India aims to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries

According to the Foreign Ministry, Modi’s visit is aimed at further strengthening relations between India and ASEAN countries. India is looking forward to ink several agreements. It also proposes to give 1,000 PhD scholarships to students from ASEAN countries at IIT institutions of India.

In January last year, 10 ASEAN leaders participated

In January last year, India hosted the 25th Indo-ASEAN Summit which was attended by 10 ASEAN leaders. During this time, India announced that it would continue to work for the continued strengthening of the ASEAN-India Strategic Partnership.

Prime Minister Modi will also attend the 14th East Asia Summit

During the stay, Prime Minister Modi will also attend the 14th East Asia Summit. The purpose of this meeting is to exchange views on East Asia Cooperation and regional and international issues. The countries involved in the summit represent 54 per cent of the world’s population, while in the case of GDP it is 58 per cent.
