UP Police Arrests Journalist Prashant Kanojia From Delhi Over A Tweet

Police initially had not intimated Kanojia and his family over which tweet the complaint against him had been registered.

Uttar Pradesh police, at around 1:45 pm on Tuesday, arrested Prashant Kanojia from his Delhi residence over tweets posted by the journalist.

Police initially had not intimated Kanojia and his family over which tweet the complaint against him had been registered.

Jagisha Arora, Kanojia’s wife told the Wire “The UP police came to our house half an hour [before the arrest]. Almost all of them were wearing civil clothes, only one cop was in police uniform. They arrested Prashant and said, ‘Tweet ka maamla hai’ (It’s about some tweets) When I asked them which tweet are they talking about, they said, ‘Bohot tweet kiye hain tumney, upar sey orders aaye hain humein, follow toh karna padega’ (You have tweeted a lot, there are orders from above, we have to follow them.).”

She also told the news portal that police took Kanojia to Vasant Vihar police station first. “They might take him to Uttar Pradesh again after obtaining a transit remand from Delhi,” Jagisha added. She also said it was her birthday yesterday and the police’s visit was like an ironic birthday present.

Later, it came to the light that he was arrested in relation to a tweet in which he had reportedly shared a morphed image of a poster with the name of Sushil Tiwari of the Hindu Army on it.

Kanojia, however, never posted the tweet or tweets he has purportedly been arrested for, according to his wife. An edited screenshot with morphed photographs is doing the rounds under his name, Arora said.

“You can check his Twitter, you will not find the tweet anywhere,” she told the Wire.
