Powerful Dynamite Blast Shocks Shivamogga, 8 Workers Killed

The blast was so powerful that its noise was heard as far as Chikmagalur, the nearest district of Shivamogga, and earthquake-like tremors were felt in the surrounding areas.

Shivamogga| A dynamite blast took place at Shivamogga in Karnataka at 10.20 pm on Thursday, killing 8 workers. Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa has ordered a high-level inquiry. On Friday morning, the team of police and officers rushed to the scene in the village of Hunasodu. The entire area is now sealed.

According to the police, explosives (gelatin sticks) were being taken to break the stones, when the blast occurred near Abbalgere village in Shivamogga. The blast was so huge that its noise was heard as far as Chikmagalur, the nearest district of Shivamogga, and earthquake-like tremors were felt in the surrounding areas.

Some claim that 50 dynamite blasts occurred one after the other. The explosion was so loud that the glass windows of the nearby houses were shattered. People felt that there was an earthquake, so people came out of the houses in panic. The smell of explosives was also lingered in the air up to 8–10 km. Shivamogga is the home district of Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa.

PM Modi also reacted to the Shivamogga incident. Taking it to Twitter, he wrote, “I am saddened at the loss of people’s lives. My condolences to their families. I wish the injured would recover soon. The state government will soon help those affected by the accident .”
