Pulitzer Winning Indian Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui Killed In Afghanistan Clashes

On Friday, the Afghan Security force unit Danish Siddiqui was tagging along with, was ambushed by the Taliban.

 

Kabul| Indian Photojournalist Danish Siddiqui was killed on Friday in Kandahar following clashes between Afghan security forces and the Taliban. Siddique who was a chief photographer with Reuters was covering the developments in Afghanistan following US announcement of withdrawal of troops. According to reports, he had tagged along with the Afghan Security forces.

Local media reported that he was recently covering a mission by Afghan special forces to rescue a policeman who had been cut off from others and had fought the Taliban for hours on his own. His reports included graphic images of vehicles of the Afghan forces being targeted with rockets.

On Friday, the Afghan Security force unit he was tagging along with, was ambushed by the Taliban. This happened in Spin Baldok district in Kandahar province.

His last few tweets give us a peek into the dangerous environment he worked in.

In 2018, Danish Siddiqui won prestigious Pulitzer Prize for covering Rohingya Refugee crisis.

Since the US announced that it will withdraw troops from Afghanistan, the Taliban has moved to make quick gains. As per reports, as many as 85% of districts in the country have already been captured by the terror outfit.

India on its part has evacuated several diplomats and support staff and security personnel from the consulate in Kandahar on an Indian Air Force flight on July 10.
