Pune police arrests activist Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves

Mumbai | The Pune police on Friday arrested Activist Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves after the Pune sessions court rejected the grant interim relief to the activist.

Earlier the Pune Sessions Court had rejected an application of Activist Sudha Bharadwaj, Arun Ferreira and Vernon Gonsalves seeking an extension of house arrest for 7 days. The Bombay High Court along with Pune Sessions Court rejected the application seeking extension of house arrest for 7 days since his house arrest ends today following Supreme Courts order. The Maharashtra police had arrested the rights activists on August 28 in connection with an FIR lodged following in case of ‘Elgaar Parishad’ held on December 31 last year which triggered violence at Koregaon-Bhima village.

The police had conducted raids at houses of various activists and intellectuals in Delhi, Haryana, Mumbai, Thane, Ranchi and Hyderabad. The police arrested Sudha Bhardwaj from Faridabad, activist and poet Varavara Rao in Hyderabad along with activists Arun Fereira and Venon Gonsalves.

The Supreme Court had earlier rejected the plea for a SIT (Special Investigation Team) probe in the Bhima Koregaon Violence while extending the house arrest of the activist for another 4 weeks.
