Punjab CM to hold emergency meeting, day after Sidhu and 3 other minister resigned

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi has called an emergency meeting on Wednesday. This comes after the resignation of former Punjab Chief, Navjot Singh Sidhu along with three other ministers.

On Tuesday afternoon Navjot Singh Sidhu resigned as Punjab Congress Chief, soon after that Congress leader Yoginder Dhingra resigned as general secretary of the state party unit, Gulzar Inder Chahal resigned as treasurer of Punjab Congress, Gautam Seth also tendered his resignation as the general secretary (in-charge training) of the state Congress and Razia Sultana resigned as Punjab cabinet minister.

Sidhu’s resignation got many criticism one of them was from former Punjab Congress chief Sunil Jakhar. He indicted Sidhu of betraying the party by resigning from the post, “It’s just not cricket! What stands compromised in this entire ‘episode’ is the faith reposed in the (outgoing?) PCC President by the Congress leadership. No amount of grandstanding can justify this breach of trust placing his benefactors in a peculiar predicament,” Mr Jakhar tweeted, referring to Pradesh Congress Committee or PCC, a formal term the party uses for its state units.

Another criticism came from former Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh, he called Sidhu ‘unstable’ and said that he warned the party of this, “I told you so…he is not a stable man and not fit for the border state of Punjab.”

Punjab Congress has been in turmoil since a few months now, last week Captain resigned from his post as 40 MLAs wrote to Congress President Sonia Gandhi to replace him. He felt the move by the MLAs humiliating and said that he won’t tolerate it anymore. After captain’s resignation Charanjit Singh Channi was made CM of Punjab. On Tuesday there were media reports about Amarinder Singh likely to meet Bhartiya Janta Party’s (BJP) President JP Nadda and Union Minister Amit Shah. Hours after Captain’s visit to Delhi reports, Navjot Singh Sidhu tweeted his resignation from Punjab Congress Chief.
