Rajasthan Stops Rapid Testing, Says ICMR Kits Not Accurate

A senior official at ICMR had said last week that the rapid anti-body tests are not for diagnosis but for surveillance.

Jaipur| The Rajasthan government has, owing to its low efficiency, has stopped doing rapid testing to track the coronavirus pandemic, state’s health minister told news channel Aaj Tak. The state has stopped using the rapid anti-body test kits given by ICMR.

“The correlation was 5.4 percent instead of an expected 90 percent,” Raghu Sharma, Rajasthan Health Minister told Aaj Tak.

He also said that the state is seeking ICMR’s guidance on whether it should continue using rapid testing.

He stressed that anti-bodies tests are not a “final solution” and PCR tests are necessary.

A senior official at ICMR had said last week that the rapid anti-body tests are not for diagnosis but for surveillance, elaborating that RT-PCR (Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) is the “ultimate technique to test for the novel coronavirus”.

The total number of coronavirus infected cases in Rajasthan are at 1,570, including 25 patients who succumbed to the air-borne virus.

Active coronavirus cases across the country are at 14,700 while casualty number is at 590, as per the central ministry data.
