Rajya Sabha election: will BJP avenge the UP Bypoll defeat?

The Rajya Sabha election is crucial for BJP as it is aiming to gain more seats to become the largest party in the upper house.

 

The polling for Rajya sabha seats in as much as six states has begun. Total 58 seats are going for polling while one seat from Kerala is going for a by-election. Out of sixteen states where the Rajya Sabha seats will be vacated this month, only six states are appearing for the Rajya Sabha election.

Interestingly, out of total 58 seats, results have been declared on 33 seats as the candidates won unopposed. So, only remaining 25 seats will today appear for the Rajya Sabha election.

The Rajya Sabha election is crucial for BJP as it is aiming to gain more seats to become the largest party in the upper house. On the other hand, Congress which has increased its MLAs in Gujarat, is eying to get more people elected to Rajya Sabha.

The polling is taking place in Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

The voting for the same began at around 9 AM and will conclude at 4 PM. According to the election commission officials the counting of votes will began around 5 PM and the results are expected to be announced on the same day.

However, all eyes are set on UP. With the maximum of 10 seats being vacated from the state, all the parties are eyeing on the state. While BJP faced a humiliating defeat in the recently concluded Gorakhpur and Phulpur bypolls at the hands of BSP-SP coalition, it is interesting to see whether BJP with the majority in the state assembly manages to avenge the defeat.

On the other hand, SP is confident that some of the BJP MLAs may cross vote. SP leader Rajendra Choudhary said that some of the BJP MPs are annoyed with the party. “The SP candidate Jaya Bachchan and BSP candidate Bhim Rao Ambedkar will win the election,” He claimed.
