In Record Daily High, India Sees Over 2 Lakh Cases Of Covid-19

This is fifth straight day of India recording over 1.5 lakh new cases and the ninth straight day of over one lakh cases.

In the last 24 hours, India recorded an an unprecedented figure of over 2 lakh Covid-19 cases, taking the total number to 1.4 crore cases. Since April 2, India has been the worst-hit country across the world, with states scrambling to impose curbs to control the virus. In overall cases, India overtook Brazil to become the second worst-hit country after the United States.

1,038 people died because of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, owing to which the total fatalities rose to 1,73,123.

This is fifth straight day of India recording over 1.5 lakh new cases and the ninth straight day of over one lakh cases. Compared to the United States which took 21 days to reach the daily count of two lakh daily cases from one lakh per day, India reached that grim milestone in just 11 days.

Being the worst-hit hit state across the country, strict restrictions have been imposed in Maharashtra, with restaurants being shut and public gatherings of more than five people being banned. The state reported 58,952 fresh coronavirus cases, taking the tally to 35,78,160, while 278 new fatalities pushed the death count to 58,804.

Southern states of Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh follow Maharashtra in total caseload.

On Wednesday, the national capital Delhi recorded 17,282 fresh cases of coronavirus, highest since the pandemic started. Sources said that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will today hold a series of meetings- first with Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and then with the Health Minister, Chief Secretary, Health Secretary and other top officials.

In the last 24 hours, Karnataka reported the highest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases this year with 11,265 new infections. Ruling out the possibility of a lockdown, the state government has imposed a night curfew until April 20 in seven district headquarters, including capital Bengaluru.

11.44 crore vaccine shots have been administered so far in an inoculation drive that kicked off in mid-january.
