Renowned Singer S.P. Balasubrahmanyam Passes Away, Was Hospitalized For Nearly Two Months

Known as a multi-talented person, SPB worked as a singer, actor, music director, dubbing artist, and film producer in multiple languages.

Legendary singer SP Balasubrahmanyam aka SPB passed away on September 25 due to illness. The renowned artist was 74 years old. SP Balasubrahmanyam had tested positive for the novel coronavirus in the first week of August. Since he had mild symptoms of the disease, he was asked to home-quarantine. He was hospitalized later as his family members were concerned. On 23 September, his health condition deteriorated and he was deemed extremely critical.

The singer is survived by his wife Savitri and his two children – daughter Pallavi and son SP Charan. His son Charan will perform his last rites, India Today reported.

Bestowed with Padma Shri Award in 2001 and Padma Bhushan in 2011, his untimely demise has come as a huge shock for the South film industry. Known as a multi-talented person, SPB worked as a singer, actor, music director, dubbing artist, and film producer in multiple languages. He has recorded over 40,000 songs in several languages, in his career spanning five decades.

SPB was in good condition till August 13, even after testing positive for the coronavirus. He was put on a ventilator after his health worsened that night. SPB was on ECMO and ventilator support for over a month. He had also tested negative for coronavirus on September 13.

The void left in the Indian music industry after SPB’s demise will be difficult to fill in.
