Sea Of Farmers Marches Towards Haryana Mini-Secretariat, Yadav, Tikait Briefly Detained

In his latest tweet, Rakesh Tikait said the farmers have been subjected to water cannon as they march. He also asked his supporters to “be ready”.

In protest against the August 28 lathi charge, protesting farmers have started marching from Karnal’s grain market to gherao district offices. Heavy police presence has been observed in their way, tasked with stopping them, potentially setting up another violent clash, NDTV reported.

Yogendra Yadav, the Swaraj India chief and one of the farmer leaders, tweeted to say Haryana police had detained several farmers leaders, including himself and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) chief Rakesh Tikait from Namaste Chowk. However, minutes later, he informed that they’d been released owing to the “pressure from farmers”.

Mr Yadav also shared a video of the march, in which sea of farmers and other protesters are seen carrying flags and placards as they pour through Karnal’s streets.

Earlier in the day, the talks between farmers’ leaders and district officials, over the permission for the march, failed. Mr Tikait and Mr Yadav were among those at the meeting. Mr Tikait tweeted: “The government is not listening… either the Khattar government agrees to our demands or it arrests us. We are ready to fill the jails of Haryana.”

Deploying over 40 companies of police and other security forces, the Haryana government has made it clear that it will not allow the farmers’ March. In five districts of the state, internet and SMS services have been suspended and barricades have been set up. News agency PTI reported that camera-fitted drones will be used as part of security measures.

Anil Vij, the home minister of Haryana, has yesterday warned farmers that necessary precautions had been taken.

In his latest tweet, Rakesh Tikait said the farmers have been subjected to water cannon as they march. He also asked his supporters to “be ready”.
