Former Governor and senior Congress Dalit leader Buta Singh (86) died on Saturday after a prolonged illness. Buta, a trusted member of the Nehru-Gandhi family, held important portfolios like Home, Agriculture, Railways, Sports Minister and other assignments, besides being Governor of Bihar and Chairman of the National Scheduled Castes Commission.

The Congress lost badly in 1977 due to the Janata Party wave. After this the party was also divided. Buta Singh then played a major role in bringing the party back to power in 1980 after hard work as the only national general secretary of the Indira Gandhi-led Congress.

Buta is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. Born on 21 March 1934 in Mustafapur village of Jalandhar, Punjab, Buta was elected to the Lok Sabha eight times.

Modi also expressed grief

In a social media post, the Prime Minister wrote, ‘Buta Singh ji was an experienced administrator. He raised his voice strongly for the welfare of the poor. I am saddened by his demise. My condolences to his family and supporters. ‘
