Sharjeel Imam Slapped With Sedition Charges For Inciting the Jamia Riot

The police informed that Sharjeel was arrested on the basis of “instigating and abetting riots” in Delhi because of his “seditious speech delivered on December 13, 2019”.

New Delhi| Delhi Police have slapped sedition charges against Sharjeel Imam, a former JNU student whose controversial speech during an ant-CAA protest landed him in trouble. The charge sheet has accused Imam of “promoting enmity” between people that led to the riots in and around Delhi’s Jamia Millia Islamia University on 15th December. The charge sheet against him is filed in the Saket district court in Delhi.

Delhi police said that the protest march organized by students of Jamia Millia Islamia University against the Citizenship Amendment Act on 15th December consequently resulted in the riots that broke out in the New Friends Colony and Jamia Nagar areas, both adjacent to the university.

“The mob indulged in large-scale rioting, stone-pelting, and arson and in the process destroyed many public and private properties. Cases of rioting, arson, and damage to public properties were registered. Many policemen and public persons were injured in the riots,” Delhi police has said.

The police informed that Sharjeel was arrested on the basis of “instigating and abetting riots” in Delhi because of his “seditious speech delivered on December 13, 2019”.

“During the investigation, on the basis of pieces of evidence collected, sections 124 A IPC and 153 A IPC (Sedition and promoting enmity between classes) were invoked in the case. The first charge sheet, in this case, was filed against the rioters arrested by the SIT led by Rajesh Deo. A supplementary charge sheet in continuation of the earlier charge sheet has now been filed in the Saket court. Further investigation in the case will be continued,” the police further added.

Sharjeel, who was also amongst the first few organizers of Shaheen Bagh protest, cam in the limelight after a controversial video clip of him went viral from his address at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). Sharjeel cam under heavy criticism after he gave a call to “cut-off” Assam and North-east from the rest of the country.
