“Shouldn’t Rahul Gandhi condemn these hooligans in the strongest words?” Javed Akhtar on Sibal house incident

New Delhi : Lyricist Javed Akhtar on Friday raised questions about the attack on the house of Senior Congress Leader Kapil Sibal.

He said that those who attacked Sibal’s house are the same people who criticises Modi govt for curbing the freedom of expression. In recent tweet he said, “Those who attacked Kapil Sibal’s house for expressing an opinion about the working process of the Congress party are the same who criticise Modi govt for curbing the freedom of expression. Shouldn’t Rahul Gandhi condemn these hooligans in the strongest words?”

Kapil Sibal has been under siege ever since such a statement was made by him.

Amid a political crisis in Punjab Congress Party, Congress leader Sibal had told the media that they are unaware of who is taking the decisions in the party as there is no full-time president. “In our party, there is no president so we don’t know who is taking these decisions. We know and yet we don’t know,” he said.

Congress workers had staged a protest outside his house at Chandni Chowk in Delhi following his statements. Some vehicles were vandalized during this period. This episode has brought the rift inside the party to the fore. Senior Congress leader Natwar Singh directly trained his gun on Rahul Gandhi and said he is calling the shots in the party without having any designation.

Kapil Sibal’s comment irked a section of Congress leaders who said that the party high command had always ensured that Sibal reaches Parliament, though Sibal did not have any organizational background. With posters reading ‘Get well soon, Kapil Sibal’,

Congress Rajya Sabha MPs Anand Sharma and Ghulam Nabi Azad have condemned the attack and demanded action from Congress President Sonia Gandhi.

Neither Rahul Gandhi nor Priyanka Gandhi has spoken anything about vandalism. Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said the meeting of the Congress Working Committee will be called soon.

G-23 members had last year written to the party’s interim chief Sonia Gandhi demanding a slew of organisational reforms.

Rahul Gandhi, who was in Kerala on Thursday, was asked to comment on the issue his party is facing. “I don’t want to speak to media right now regarding the issues. I will react later,” he told ANI.
