Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi Give Congress’ Foundation Day Event A Miss

Though Sonia Gandhi has been avoiding public events due to health issues, Rahul Gandhi has left on a short personal visit abroad only on Sunday.

The Congress party celebrated its 136th foundation day at its headquarters in the national capital today, however, party president Sonia Gandhi and former party chief Rahul Gandhi gave the event a miss. At the AICC headquarters, senior leader A K Antony unfurled the flag in the presence of senior leaders like Ghulam Nabi Azad, Anand Sharma and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.

Though Sonia Gandhi has been avoiding public events due to health issues, Rahul Gandhi has left on a short personal visit abroad only on Sunday.

Priyanka Gandhi, speaking to reporters after the event, said the government should “listen to the voice of farmers and take back the laws” and should not paint the agitation as a “political conspiracy”. “It is a sin to use the kind of words they are using for farmers. Government is answerable to farmers. Government should listen to them and take back the laws,” she said.

BJP was quick to react on Rahul Gandhi’s absence from the event and taunted the leader over his foreign trip. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, hitting out at Rahul Gandhi, tweeted this morning in Hindi: “Congress here is celebrating its 136th Foundation Day and Rahul Gandhi has disappeared.”

Accusing the BJP of “indulging in low-level politics”, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal also accused the saffron party of hitting out at Rahul Gandhi “because they want to target only one leader”. “Rahul Gandhi has gone to see his grandmother. Is it wrong? Everybody has the right to undertake personal visits,” Mr Venugopal said.
