Speculations Rife As Mukul Roy Skips Key BJP Meeting

Though Mukul Roy has not personally denied or confirmed the speculations, his son Shubranshu has not ruled out a return to the Trinamool Congress.

BJP leader Mukul Roy has made the saffron party anxious after skipping a key meeting Kolkata. The leader’s silence over the reports that he is heading back to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress has only helped the speculations grow.

With several leaders raising tough questions and not hiding their resentment after the party’s election loss, the BJP has launched efforts to salvage its Bengal unit.

Other than Mukul Roy, who happens to be the Vice President of the BJP, Suvendu Adhikari also failed to attend the meeting called by state chief Dilip Ghosh. Sources pointed out that Mr Adhikari is in Delhi for meetings with the leadership, adding that Mr Roy’s wife is in hospital so he could not get away.

Though Mukul Roy has not personally denied or confirmed the speculations, his son Shubranshu has not ruled out a return to the Trinamool Congress.

Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee – recently elevated to a key post – visited Mr Roy in hospital last week and inquired after his wife. Prime Minister Modi called Mr Roy the very next morning to ask about his wife’s health.

Mamata Banerjee’s TMC has claimed that 35 BJP MLAs are eager to return and are in touch with the leadership.

Rajiv Banerjee, the ex-minister who joined the BJP in the presence of Home Minister Amit Shah after dramatically flying to Delhi in a private jet, is also among the doubters.

In a Facebook post, Mr Banerjee questioned his new party’s move to threaten President’s rule in Bengal and the Centre’s moves against Mamata Banerjee. He said the people of Bengal will not take it well. He advised the party to focus on Covid and the aftermath of Cyclone Yaas.

Sabyasachi Dutta, another Trinamool leader who is believed to be close to Mukul Roy and now with the BJP, told a local channel: “Getting leaders who can’t speak Bengali to run the campaign was a mistake as there was a communication gap.”
