‘Stop all flights from landing in Bengal’: Mamata Banerjee Writes to PM Modi To Combat Coronavirus

Mamata Banerjee said her government had already suspended all inter-state public transport and reduced the number of intra-state buses in West Bengal.

New Delhi| West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has written a letter to Prime Minister Modi asking why are flights still being allowed to move in the country and has asked the Centre to stop flights from landing in the state.

In a letter on Monday, Mamata Banerjee said the Bengal government is enforcing a lockdown across the state from 5 pm and is also taking several painstaking measures to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Ms Banerjee’s letter comes at a time when over 80 districts across the country have been brought under lockdown to check the spread of the virus.

“…we are seriously concerned that the government of India is still allowing operation of flights causing a huge breach of shutdown and quarantine protocol with no arrangement of social distancing that we are so painfully managing in the state,” Mamata Banerjee wrote in her letter to the Prime Minister.

The Bengal Chief Minister said her government had already suspended all inter-state public transport and reduced the number of intra-state buses.

Bengal has reported seven cases of coronavirus so far.

According to a notification issued on Sunday evening, Kolkata, all other urban areas and some of the rural areas of the state will be put under lockdown from 5 pm on Monday till March 27. Official sources said the decision was taken after consultation with the central government.
