Tightening Grip On OTT Platforms: Amazon, Netflix, Others Brought Under I&B Ministry

This will enable the government to control the online content and the web series creators will also work on the project as per the government guidelines.

New Delhi| The OTT platforms in India are constantly expanding and the content in the form of web series and movies is fetching eyeballs. However, many concerns were also raised on the regulation of the content on these platforms. Now after the intervention of the Supreme Court, the government has issued a notification, under which online news portals, online content providers have been brought under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting. That is, now the government will monitor these content as well.

This will enable the government to control the online content and the web series creators will also work on the project as per the government guidelines. Here’s how this decision of the government can affect the web series content:

Adult content will be censored

One of the major concern regarding the OTT platforms was the spurt in uncensored obscene/adult scenes in web series and shows. However, now the makers of the web series may have to take government permission for this. In this case, like films released in theatres, they will also be monitored and may have to be shown to a regulatory authority before the release of the film.

Control over the Language used

The use of abusive, adult or strong language was another such concern which can now be controlled. The government is expected to impose some restrictions on the kind of language used in these web series.

Challenges for Content Makers

Currently, the content is made available to the audience unregulated, due to which they attract a lot of audiences. However, now content creators will have to follow the government guidelines. At the same time, web shows like movies may require a certificate such as a censor board and this may lead to the cutting of many scenes.

Problems regarding foreign content

Content from other countries is also available in large quantities on many OTT platforms, which have been made following the guidelines of those countries. However, the rules are different in India, in such a situation, it may be possible to control any such websites, which will have more adult content.
