Tirath Singh Rawat To Become New Chief Minister Of Uttarakhand, Oath At 4 PM

The 56-year-old BJP MP from Pauri constituency was the chief of the party in Uttarakhand in 2013-15 and also an MLA from the state in the past.

With just a year to the state election and after the resignation on Tuesday of Trivendra Singh Rawat, Tirath Singh Rawat is all set to become the new Chief Minister of state of Uttarakhand.

The 56-year-old BJP MP from Pauri constituency was the chief of the party in Uttarakhand in 2013-15 and also an MLA from the state in the past. He will be sworn in later today.

Tirath Singh Rawat was selected over prominent candidates including Union Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank and Uttarakhand Minister Dhan Singh Rawat.

Though his pick came as a surprise for many, it is an interesting choice. As per sources, the decision was taken with the express approval of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Mr Rawat is considered different than other leaders since he is not identified with any faction in the Uttarakhand BJP.

The BJP has had a tough time dealing with two groups; old-time BJP players, who were pitching for their candidate and imports from the Congress, like Harak Singh Rawat and Satpal Maharaj, who were pushing for theirs.

On the other hand, Tirath Singh Rawat too is low profile like his predecessor and not known to be a mass leader. A former member of the BJP’s ideological mentor RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh), he is believed to be more of an organization man.

“I want to thank PM Modi, BJP chief, Home Minister and central leadership who trusted me, a mere party worker who comes from a small village. I had never imagined that I’d reach here. We will make all efforts to meet people’s expectations and take forward the work done in the last 4 years”, Tirath Singh Rawat said.
