Hathras police have so far arrested four accused named Sandeep, Ramkumar, Luvkush and Ravi in the case. All four allegedly belong to upper caste families. However, Dalit organizations allege that the police tried to cover up the matter.
According to them, initially the cops just registered a case of attempted murder. The same persons were accused but none was arrested for ten days. The accused were arrested when Dalit leader Chandrasekhar tweeted and announced to go to Aligarh. A section on gangrape was also added later. However, the police say that the first case was registered on the basis of the complaint lodged by the family and later the case of gangrape was registered on the basis of the victim’s statement.
The victim was admitted to Aligarh Medical College where the police had reached on September 19 to take her statement i.e five days after the incident. The victim’s condition was serious that day and she could not record her statement. Then on September 21 and 22, circle officers and women police personnel arrived to take the victim’s statement.
