Mobile internet services have been suspended in Kashmir valley today in wake of the encounter underway in Awantipora.
Srinagar: A top Hizbul terrorist commander has been trapped down by security forces conducting an anti-terrorist operation in Kashmir valley’s Awantipora area.
On Tuesday evening, the overnight operation by the security forces started when a massive search operation was launched in Naikoo’s village.
As per a Jammu & Kashmir Police spokesperson, the operation was launched late Tuesday night and heavy firing is presently going on as forces target the house in which the terrorist commander is considered to be hiding.
The terrorist is a high-ranking commander of terror group Hizbul Mujahideen and one of Kashmir’s most wanted, sources said.
Mobile internet service was suspended in all 10 districts of Kashmir Valley soon after the encounter started.
“Contact established in the third operation at Awantipur. Top terrorist commander is trapped. Exchange of fire on. Details shall follow,” J&K Police tweeted at 9.07 am. Minutes earlier the police tweeted: “Third operation launched by Awantipur Police last night on a specific input too is in progress at Beigpora Awantipora. Senior officers monitoring since last night”.

The Hizbul Mujahideen’s poster boy and commander Burhan Wani was killed in a gunfight with the security forces in Kokarnag area in Anantnag district on July 8, 2016.
Riyaz Naikoo took over as the commander of the outfit after he was killed.
Naikoo, before joining the militant ranks, worked as a mathematics teacher at a local school. He was known to have a passion for painting roses before he picked up the gun at the age of 33.
