Tripura Congress Chief Pijush Biswas Resigns, Likely To Join TMC

The State chief’s resignation is yet another blow to the grand old party and its attempts to reclaim power in the northeastern state.

According to a short tweet posted Saturday afternoon, Tripura Congress leader Pijush Kanti Biswas has resigned as chief of the party’s state unit and “retired from politics as well”.

“With sincere gratitude I thank all Congress leaders, supporters for your cooperation during my tenure as TPCC President (acting). Today I have resigned from the post of President and retired from politics as well. My sincere gratitude towards Sonia Gandhiji,” Mr Biswas tweeted.

The State chief’s resignation is yet another blow to the grand old party and its attempts to reclaim power in the northeastern state, where an Assembly election is due in 2023.

Earlier this month, former Congress MP Sushmita Dev quit the party to join Mamata Banerjee-led TMC. Dev is daughter of Assam Congress loyalist and influential Bengali leader Santosh Mohan Dev, she was the chief of the Congress’s women’s wing, the All India Mahila Congress. She had earlier been an MP from Assam, the stronghold of her father – Silchar.

Reports suggested that Dev’s induction in the TMC was done keeping the party’s attempts in mind to expand in Tripura.

Tripura TMC leader Subal Bhowmik said Sushmita’s joining the party was a welcome development which would give a boost to the TMC’s fight against the ruling BJP in Tripura.

If Pijush Biswas joins the TMC, the Mamata Banerjee-led party will emerge as a strong opposition in the state to the saffron party.
