Historic! Two women devotees enter Sabarimala Temple for the first time since SC order

Two Kerala women Bindu and Kanakdurga entered the Sabarimala Shrine at around 3.45 AM in the morning becoming the first women below the age 50 to enter the temple.

Pathanamthitta| In a first-ever incident since the Supreme Court order, two women devotees entered Sabarimala shrine on Tuesday. The two women Bindu and Kanakdurga who are in their 40s offered their prayers at Sabarimala temple at around 3.45 am in the morning. They were accompanied by police personnel.

This is for the first time since the Supreme Court bench in its 4:1 verdict removed the ban on entry of women devotees between the age of 10 to 50 in Sabarimala temple.

The two women who entered: 42 years old Bindu is a CPI(ML) activist from Koyilandy in Kozhikode district while 44 years old Kanakadurga is a civil supplies employee from Angadipuram in Malappuram. Two of them started climbing the steps to Lord Ayyappa shrine at around midnight and reached the sannidhanam at around 3.45AM. The video of the same later went viral on social media.

After the video went viral, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan confirmed the news. He said, “Today, two women entered Sabarimala Temple. We had issued standing orders to police to provide all possible protection to any woman who wants to enter the temple.”

However, the Pandalam erstwhile royal Shashi Verma lashed out at the women claiming the move wasn’t historic but against the customs of Sabarimala. He further added that the temple will be closed and be “purified”.
