Union Minister Ramdas Athawale slapped at public event; party calls statewide bandh in protest

Mumbai | Union Minister for Social Justice and empowerment Ramdas Athawale was slapped by a youth on Saturday during an event in the Ambarnath town of Thane.

According to police, the event took place on Saturday when the Republican party of India (Athawale) chief was coming down from the stage during an event. “The accused identified as Pravin Gosavi approached Athawale for a picture to be clicked but slapped the Union Minister,” added police. “Gosavi was later beaten by the supporters of Athawale and has been shifted to the state-run J J hospital in Mumbai after receiving initial treatment in Ambernath,” informed police.

 

Speaking on the incident RPI(A) leader Kakasaheb Kanwalkar alleged that the attacked was preplanned and demanded that the attacker should be nabbed. Kanwalkar further informed that the party has called for a statewide bandh in protest to the attack on their leader.

Responding to the media on the attack Ramdas Athawale said,”I’m a popular leader, this might have been done at behest of someone angry over something. Security arrangement there wasn’t adequate. I’ll meet CM over this incident. It should be investigated.”

Meanwhile, the motive behind the attack is yet to be know and police are investigating the matter.
