Union Minister Says Quarantine Not Mandatory For Him As He Is A Minister

The Yeddyurappa-led BJP government has made it mandatory to undergo a week-long institutional quarantine for all the passengers arriving by domestic flights.

Bengaluru| Union Minister Sadanand Gowda on Monday was accused of flouting the quarantine rules set up by the Karnataka government for those arriving in Bengaluru by flights at the airport. The BJP MP arrived from Delhi at Bengaluru today and straightaway got into his car and drove off to his home, without following the institutional quarantine requirement.

The Yeddyurappa-led BJP government has made it mandatory to undergo a week-long institutional quarantine for all the passengers arriving by domestic flights in Bangalore from Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh. The charges of the quarantine will be borne by the returnee.

ā€œIncoming domestic flight passengers from Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Delhi, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu & Madhya Pradesh will undergo 7-day institutional quarantine followed by home quarantine,ā€ Karnataka DGP Pravin Sood had tweeted.

Sadanand Gowda, the Union Minister of Chemicals and Fertilisers told news channel Times Now, “According to the state government, there are certain exemptions in the quarantine rules. The essential commodities and the persons who are supplying essential commodities, the persons who are taking care of things which need to be done to contain coronavirus, are exempted.ā€

ā€œI am the minister for pharmacy. If sufficient medicines are not supplied by my department, then what will happen. So, to take care of the things, to have a discussion with various state governments, it is my responsibility and that is why I have not gone anywhere, I am here. I was in Delhi for the last 63 days, but I didnā€™t hire any chartered plane to come back to Bengaluru. Today, I got a special flight and I returned to the city,” Gowda further added in his defense.

“If I donā€™t interact with the state governments and supply chains, what will happen,” he said while adding that he has a meeting with the health minister and Karnataka deputy chief minister in the afternoon at 4 PM.
