UP Govt Requests Supreme Court To Monitor CBI Probe In Hathras Case

On Tuesday, the CBI started its probe in Hathras case, with a team of CBI officials visiting the woman’s family.

The Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government requested the Supreme Court to monitor the CBI probe into the alleged gang rape and torture in Uttar Pradesh’s Hathras of a 20-year-old Dalit woman, who succumbed to injuries last month in Delhi. It also said that the state government is “committed to provide complete security to victims’ family and witnesses”.

On Tuesday, the CBI started its probe in Hathras case, with a team of CBI officials visiting the woman’s family, about a month after she was allegedly gang-raped by four men of a so-called upper caste community.

The UP government has also asked the apex court to direct the central probe agency to submit fortnightly status reports to the state government so that the same can be filed in Supreme Court through the police chief, NDTV reported.

The UP government, giving details of the security provided to the woman’s family in its affidavit in the top court, submitted a list of police personnel posted for security in Hathras, including outside victim’s home.

The Uttar Pradesh government said that eight CCTV cameras have been installed outside her home to keep a watch and the police has ensured that there is no intrusion of privacy of the family.

The Supreme Court will take up this case tomorrow.

Earlier, the Allahabad High Court had taken suo-motu cognizance of the case. The high court on Tuesday said the cremation of the 20-year-old woman in Hathras by the state authorities, though done in the name of law and order, “is prima facie an infringement upon the human rights of the victim and her family”.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Seema Pahuja is heading the CBI team in this case. She has earlier handled the Shimla rape-murder case.
