Want To Undergo An Educational Session With A Psychologist : Madras HC Judge On Same-Sex Relations

“Ultimately in this case, the words must come from my heart and not from my head, and the same will not be possible if I am not fully “woke” on this aspect,” the judge said

In a significant observation on Wednesday, Madras HC Judge Justice N Anand Venkatesh said that he would like to undergo an educational session with a psychologist to understand same-sex relations better.

He said this while hearing a case of a lesbian couple seeking protection. The case pertained to two young women who fled their homes in Madurai and reached Chennai after their families opposed their relationship, with one of the parents filing a missing complaint.

The Madras HC judge noted that such matters are sensitive and needed to be heard with empathy and making sure that both, parents and the petitioners are made to understand the situation they’re in. The Court also pointed out that is a sample case reflecting on how our society is still trying to come to terms with same-sex relationships.

In an earlier hearing, the judge admitted that even he is trying to shed his pre-conceived notions on the matter of same-sex relationships.

“Ultimately in this case, the words must come from my heart and not from my head, and the same will not be possible if I am not fully “woke” on this aspect,” the judge said. The court adjourned the plea to June 7 and also directed the government to close the FIR filed against the two.
