#WATCH: Migrant Workers In Surat Go On Rampage, Torch Vehicles Demanding Passage To Return Homes

Most of the migrant workers arrested in Surat belong to Odisha and want to return to their villages. They have been stuck here for the past several weeks.

 

Surat| The pan-India lockdown has left the most vulnerable section of the society in the lurch of job and safety. Thousands of them are trying to return to their home towns from cities they were working in. However, since lockdown has been imposed they are unable to move from the cities.

The anger of the migrant workers was seen in Surat on Friday night where hundreds of workers took to the street. These migrants- the construction workers and handloom workers created a ruckus on the streets of Lakshana area of Surat and demanded permission from the state government to go back to their home towns.

The protesting migrants also set fire to 5 handcarts of vegetable. Some of them burnt tires, vandalized ambulances and damaged passenger trains.

Surat’s DCP Rakesh Barot said that migrant workers stranded in Surat jammed the road and threw stones. Police have arrested 80 people on the spot. All these people are demanding to go back home.

Most of the migrant workers arrested told the police that they are from Odisha and want to return to their villages. They have been stuck here for the past several weeks. They worry about how they will be able to survive here if the lockdown period increases. Meanwhile, the police have decided to increase patrolling in the city’s Laskana, Diamond Nagar and Vipul Nagar.
