Haridwar| As India reported another record spike in new infection cases in the last 24 hours, thousands of devotees were seen taking a dip in the holy river of Ganga, flouting the Covid-19 guidelines. Visuals shared by News Agency ANI showed thousands of devotees, many without masks crowding on the bank of river Ganga in Uttarakhand’s Hari Ki Pauri. As the devotees gathered for Second Royal Bath (Shahi Snan), social distancing went for a toss. On the other hand, police have said that it is difficult to ensure social distancing or even issue fines amid the huge crowd.

The full Kumbh Mela comes after every 12 years where Hindu devotees, Naga seers and Akharas come together to take a bath in the holy river of Ganga. This year Haridwar is hosting the Kumbh. Amid rising Covid-19 cases, the Uttarakhand govt had made negative RT-PCR test mandatory for those who wish to participate in the Kumbh.
Uttarakhand on Saturday reported 1,233 fresh Covid-19 infections, 317 recoveries, and three deaths. The Covid-19 case tally in the state stood at 107,479, with over 6,000 active cases till Saturday, reported ANI.
