A woman named Razia from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly, who was given triple talaq by her husband over the phone and was allegedly locked up for a month without food and water died during her medical treatment on Tuesday.
According to Razia’s sister, the victim, who has a six-year-old child, got divorced from her husband over the phone. Subsequently, she was locked inside the room without any food or water and was thrashed by her husband for dowry.
“After locking her up for a month in the house, he left her at a relative’s house. I got her home as soon as I was informed. We went to the police to report the incident. However, the police did not register any case,” she said.
An organisation called ‘Mera Haq’, which had helped Razia’s family in her medical treatment told the media that they would continue to fight for justice. Till her death, Razia kept saying that she wanted to live for her son Anas, who too was kept starved by her husband, and wanted to see her husband punished for his crimes, the organisation told the media.
Founder of NGO Mera Haq, Farhat Naqvi, told a news agency that Razia’s husband Nahim was married earlier and had tortured his first wife in the same way. “Razia was admitted to the district hospital. After that, she was transferred to Lucknow for the treatment. Her condition became critical and she was transferred back,” said Mr Naqvi.
Several Muslim women who have been divorced because of triple talaq, including on Skype and on WhatsApp, had appealed to the top court to end the practice.
