Death Toll In Mustafabad Rises To 11; Landlord Dead Too

According to the police, 14 people had been rescued with some yet trapped beneath.

In the early hours of Saturday, a four-storey building collapsed in northeast Delhi, taking four lives and around 12 people are feared to still be trapped beneath the ruins. This incident took place in the Mustafabad region.

According to the police, at least 14 people were earlier rescued from the site and were taken to the GTB hospital where 4 were declared dead upon arrival. Numbers of the deceased rose to 11. Eight of the 11 people who have lost their lives in the horrific incident belonged to the same family. Three of the dead are women, while four children have also lost their lives in the collapse.

The landlord of the building who was identified as a 60 year-old Tehsin also lost his life in the collapse.

11 others have sustained varying degrees of injuries in the collapse, according to the list shared by the Delhi Police.

According to Rajender Atwal, Divisional Fire Officer of the Delhi Fire Service, the incident took place at 2:50 am.

โ€œAt least 10 fire tenders were deployed for the rescue operation. NDRF (National Disaster Response Force), DFS (Delhi Fire Services), and other civic agencies are carrying out the rescue operation,โ€ said Atwal.

Adding to this he said, โ€œImmediately after receiving the call, the local police reached the site and began the rescue operation. It is suspected that some construction work was also ongoing in the four-storey building located at the narrow lanes of Shakti Vihar.โ€

Rescue teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), firefighters and Delhi Police have rushed to the spot. The police further said that they are probing the cause behind the buildingโ€™s collapse.

As reported by the police, several families in the building were suspected to be staying on rent and the tragedy took place when the inhabitants were sleeping.

The earlier four deceased people have been identified as Reshma, Chandani, Naveed and Danish. Ten others were earlier admitted to the hospital, said the police.

The building collapse occurred just a few hours after a sudden shift in Delhiโ€™s weather on Friday night when heavy rainfall and thunderstorms lashed several parts of the city.

In another such incident last week, a wall of an under-construction building collapsed near East Delhiโ€™s Madhu Vihar police station due to a dust and thunderstorm, causing one fatality and injuring two others.
