Around 4 Lakh Indians Gave Up Their Citizenship In Last Three Years: Centre In Parliament

In the last three years, there has been an increase in the figures of people giving up the citizenship of India and settling in other countries. In the last three years, 392,643 people from India have given up their citizenship of India and have taken up citizenship of countries like the US, Canada, Australia and others.

The BSP’s Saharanpur MP Haji Fazlur Rehman had asked a question to the Home Ministry regarding this figure. He asked following questions:

  • What is the details and number of persons who have relinquished Indian citizenship from 2019 to current year?
  • What are the reasons given by these people for renouncing Indian citizenship?
  • Which countries have they taken citizenship of?

Answering these questions, Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai has given information to the House. He has released a list of people who have given up their citizenship of the country in the last three years before the House. According to which, 392,643 people have given up their citizenship of India in the last three years.

Year 2019: 1,44,017
Year 2020: 85,256
Year 2021: 1,63,370

America, Canada and Australia are the favorite countries among those who have left the citizenship of India.

In the last three years, the maximum number of 1,70, 795 people have taken the citizenship of America, leaving the citizenship of India.

Year 2019 : 61,683
Year 2020 :30,828
Year 2021: 78,284

Canada is in second place where 64,071 people have taken citizenship in the last three years.

Year 2019 : 25,381
Year 2020: 17,093
Year 2021: 21,597

Australia is in third place, where 58,391 people have taken citizenship.

Year 2021: 23,533

Why did people give up citizenship?

The ministry has not given any clear reason for relinquishing citizenship by the Indian. In its reply, the ministry has said that these persons have given up their citizenship of India due to personal reasons.

If we look at the data for all three years, we will find that fewer people have left citizenship in 2020 as compared to 2019 and 2021.
