Arvind Kejriwal Takes A Dig At BJP Says, โ€œTrying To Make Sonia Gandhi PM Through Backdoorโ€

Arvind Kejriwal was responding to a question about BJP leaders stating that social activist Medha Patkar would be AAPโ€™s chief ministerial candidate in the Gujarat assembly polls

Ahmedabad: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday attacked BJP in poll-bound Gujarat and alleged that the party is trying to make Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi as the โ€œPrime Minister through the backdoorโ€ and โ€œsuccessorโ€ to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kejriwal was responding to a question about BJP leaders stating that social activist Medha Patkar would be AAPโ€™s chief ministerial candidate in the Gujarat assembly polls. โ€œI have heard that BJP will make Sonia Gandhi as the PM candidate after PM Modi. Ask them what they have to say on this. Ask them that Kejriwal has alleged that you are going to make Sonia Gandhi PM candidate and the successor to PM Modi at the national level. What do they have to say on this? The BJP is trying to make Sonia Gandhi the PM of the country through the backdoor. Ask them this question,โ€ Kejriwal said.

The BJP has sought to make Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA) founder Medha Patkarโ€™s past ties with AAP a poll issue in Gujarat. Party leaders have said that Patkar opposed Narmada project and have talked of โ€œrenewed tiesโ€ between her and AAP.

Kejriwal alleged that the BJP โ€œhas not done anythingโ€ for the development of Gujarat and claimed it has โ€œno programme for the next five yearsโ€.

Kejriwal also claimed that the Congress party is โ€œfinishedโ€ as a party. โ€œCongress is finished. You should stop taking their questions. People no more care about their questions,โ€ Kejriwal said in response to a query.
The AAP leader has earlier urged the people not to โ€œwaste their votesโ€ on Congress. After its victory in the held Punjab Assembly elections earlier this year, AAP is seeking to expand its footprint in other states.
Gujarat will face assembly polls later this year.

Afghanistan: Repression Of Media Personnel Continues As Taliban Detains Journalist Since Three Months

With the consistent arbitrary arrests of journalists by the Taliban, the media in Afghanistan faces several restrictions, repression of media personnel continues

Kabul: Amid the ongoing crackdown on journalists in Afghanistan, another incident has come to light as a local journalist in the central province of Kapisa, Abdul Hanan Mohammadi has been detained by the Taliban for almost three months now without any crime, the family of the arrested journalist said in a statement, TOLOnews reported.

โ€œThey didnโ€™t accept my complaint and didnโ€™t let me see himโ€ฆmy son is innocent and I wish he was free,โ€ Mohammadiโ€™s mother said, adding that her son was detained while covering a news event in Kapisa. In another statement, Mohammadiโ€™s brother, Abdullah Khan said, โ€œMy brother was a journalist and was preparing a report. We call on the Islamic Emirate to release him.โ€
However, the deputy spokesman for the Islamic Emirate, Bilal Karimi denied the allegations and said, โ€œHe is not detained because of being a journalist. The intelligence and security departments might have arrested him for other issues.โ€

According to Khaama Press, Deputy Head of Afghanistanโ€™s Freelance Journalists Union, Farhad Behroz said that the case of Mohammadi and other journalists in detention should be directly pursued through the commission as the media-supporting organization voiced concerns over the atrocities against media personnel in Afghanistan and their unlawful detentions.

According to UNAMA, there have been significant changes in the countryโ€™s media landscape, including the closure of more than half of the free media, the evacuation of hundreds of journalists, and rising work restrictions, violence, and threats against journalists.

Notably, the ever-increasing restrictions against media in Afghanistan have also drawn widespread criticism globally with the United Nations (UN) and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) decrying the arrests, demanding the Taliban stop harassing local journalists and stifling freedom of speech through continued detentions and threats.

With the consistent arbitrary arrests of journalists by the Taliban, the media in Afghanistan faces several restrictions.

Since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in mid-August last year, it rolled back womenโ€™s rights advances and media freedom revoking the efforts on gender equality and freedom of speech in the country.
Over 45 per cent of journalists have quit since the Taliban assumed power.

The Taliban had promised womenโ€™s rights, media freedom, and amnesty for government officials in the groupโ€™s first news conference after the takeover in August. However, activists, former government employees, and journalists among others continue to face retribution.
