Assam CM Pledges To Enforce UCC, Outlaw Polygamy Post LS Polls

Assamโ€™s CM, Himanta Biswa Sarma, announced plans to prohibit polygamy after the Lok Sabha elections, indicating the Northeastern stateโ€™s impending implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). He reiterated his governmentโ€™s dedication to UCC implementation and emphasized the priority of outlawing polygamy and child marriage. Assam will be the third state in India, after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, to adopt the UCC.

In Keralaโ€™s Kasaragod, a court acquitted three RSS activists charged with the 2017 murder of a madrassa teacher inside a mosque. Judge K K Balakrishnan of the Kasaragod Principal Sessions court cleared Akhilesh, Jithin, and Ajesh, residents of Kelugude. Mohammed Riyas Maulavi, a 34-year-old madrassa teacher from Choori, was discovered murdered in his mosque room on March 20, 2017.
