New Delhi: Torrential rainfall and climate worsened over the week, reported the Assam administration earlier today. The state and the northeast bracket of regions have been reportedly receiving record rainfall resulting in landslides and flash floods.

Both Meghalaya and Assam received 272mm more rainfall than normal until Wednesday this week.

The rainfall that has affected people in the region took a decline with rising water levels and storms triggering tumultuous landslides all across the region early this week.

Officials report that at least 11 lakh people in 25 districts across the Assam state region have been affected. Out of which Bajali district has suffered the most damage.

In the Assamese district of Baksa, a major chunk of a bridge collapsed in the Subankhata area this Wednesday due to constant rainfall and steep water level hike in the Dihing River.

The water levels have been dangerously high in the Brahmaputra and Gauranga rivers since last week, reported officials.

In Guwahati, reportedly, 19782 hectares of cropland remain presently submerged while 1,510 villages belonging to 72 revenue circles are dangerously underwater.

The persistent landslides in the Ajantanagar region in the Noonmati area of Guwahati have reportedly claimed three casualties.

According to officials, ten train connections have been cancelled temporarily due to waterlogging on the railway lines running between Nalbari and Ghograpar.

In Meghalaya, where five people have died, the state government has formed committees to study and minimize the total number of victims resulting from the extreme climate change.

Earlier this week, NH 06 was closed due to landslides in several zones on the route. The highway is a significant bottleneck that connects the rest of the country to the region.
