Brij Bhushan’s Son Karan Bhushan Is BJP Candidate From UP’s Kaiserganj

BJP’s heavyweight MP and former Wrestling Federation of India President, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, won’t be contesting in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Instead, the BJP has fielded his son, Karan Bhushan Singh, as its candidate for Uttar Pradesh’s Kaiserganj constituency. This announcement, made this afternoon, resolves the speculation surrounding the Kaiserganj seat and its well-known MP.

Besides announcing Karan Bhushan Singh’s name, the BJP named Pratap Singh its candidate from Congress stronghold Rae Bareli. The Congress has yet to name its pick from the prestigious seat earlier held by Sonia Gandhi.

Karan Bhushan Singh, the youngest son of Brij Bhushan Singh, will now contest from the Kaiserganj seat. Brij Bhushan Singh has won the Kaiserganj seat three times in a row, including in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, where he secured a victory by a margin of two lakh votes.

Karan Bhushan Singh currently serves as the president of the Uttar Pradesh Wrestling Association and the Cooperative Village Development Bank in Nawabganj, Gonda.

Speculation arose regarding Brij Bhushan’s candidacy following allegations of sexual harassment against him. Brij Bhushan, who served as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India for almost ten years, faced accusations from six women wrestlers. The allegations prompted a significant protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar for weeks, with top Indian wrestlers like Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia participating.

The BJP heavyweight has denied all the allegations. The case against him is pending before a Delhi court.
Following the wrestlers’ protests, a case was registered against Brij Bhushan in June last year.
Last month, the BJP leader blamed the media for the delay in announcing the party’s candidate for Kaiserganj. “The announcement of my candidature is being delayed because of you people,” he stated, addressing the
media.

Kaiserganj will vote on May 20 in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha election. The last date for filing nominations is tomorrow.
