Civil Defence Mock Drills Run Across India After Operation Sindoor

The civil defence mock drills are being conducted in 244 districts

Civil defence mock drills are being conducted across India on Wednesday. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had given instructions on Monday. All states and union territories were told to conduct these drills. This is so as to check preparedness of the civilians in case of “new and complex” threats.

The civil defence mock drills are being conducted in 244 districts on Wednesday, 07 May 2025. This is divided into three groups.

Category I districts need complete implementation of civil defence programs. On the other hand, Category II and III need to be implemented partly, but in differing measures.

At the Collectorate building within Ernakulam, in Kerala, a mock drill started with an alarm going out and the lights were turned off. A controlled fire was created and everyone was safely evacuated as part of the mock drill.

Sirens were activated at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi as part of the nation’s mock drills. Fire brigade units, along with medical teams and several ambulances, were promptly dispatched to the location.

A similar exercise took place at the Reserve Bank of India building, where participants were advised to avoid glass windows and seek shelter while protecting their heads with their hands.

Delhi saw 55 locations having mock drills and multiple locations had PCR vans and fire engines stationed there.

In Bengaluru around 4 pm, mock drills were done as a part of an operation called ‘Operation Abhyaas’ which is in line with directives from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

The drills encompassed rescue operations for fire incidents, debris removal, evacuation from high-rise buildings, and medical emergency responses. The entire drill concluded within thirty minutes.

Even Mumbai witnessed a mock drill being done, which was in Cross Maidan and also at Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT). It started with sirens screeching and afterwards the civil defence staff took care of the drill.

Mock drills were also held at four schools in Kolkata and in a school in Siliguri in West Bengal.

Such drills had not been conducted since 1971, when Pakistan again attacked India.
