CM Arvind Kejriwal Gets Bail In ED Summons Case

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been granted bail by The Rouse Avenue Court in the national capital city on Saturday in the Enforcement Directorate summons case.

He had missed summons from the agency, which filed a case against him. It was his first time appearing in person before the court for this case. Previously, he attended hearings through video calls.

The Enforcement Directorate filed two complaints against Kejriwal for not obeying their summonses regarding the Delhi excise policy case probe. They aim to take Kejriwal’s statement on various aspects, including policy formulation, pre-finalization meetings, and bribery allegations.

Kejriwal’s lawyer, Ramesh Gupta, stated that the court ordered him to pay a bond of ₹50,000, which he did. Then, he requested copies of documents under CrPC sections 207 and 91, set for discussion on April 1. Kejriwal had been missing summonses, citing them as illegal and politically driven.

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari has attacked Kejriwal, stating that, having secured bail on a ₹15,000 bond for ED complaints, he must heed the court’s summons and abide by the law. Upholding the law is imperative for someone sworn to the Constitution.

On the other hand, AAP leader Reena Gupta countered that this case was a baseless political vendetta. We’ve maintained from the outset that there is no evidence against Kejriwal.

The court declined to halt the summonses on Friday. Kejriwal argued his absences weren’t deliberate and provided valid explanations, which weren’t deemed false.

The Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate recently acknowledged the Enforcement Directorate’s second complaint and issued a fresh summons to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for his personal appearance before the court on March 16.

Six charge sheets have been submitted in the Delhi excise policy case. In the latest, AAP leader Sanjay Singh and aide Sarvesh Mishra were named. The ED alleged AAP utilized ₹45 crore kickbacks from the policy in their Goa election campaign in 2022.

Manish Sisodia and Sanjay Singh have already been detained on similar charges. AAP alleges the Centre aims to arrest Arvind Kejriwal to hinder his Lok Sabha campaign.
