Congress’ Spokesperson Gourav Vallabh Joins BJP

Professor Gourav Vallabh, a well-known spokesperson of the Congress party, joined the BJP today in New Delhi. This comes hours after he posted a letter on X, detailing his reasons for quitting Congress.

In a letter addressed to Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, Professor Gourav Vallabh detailed his reasons for stepping away from the party. He cited the party’s lack of clear direction and his disagreement with certain issues, such as the caste census and slogans against traditional Hindu beliefs, as key factors in his decision.

In his resignation letter, Vallabh conveyed his unease regarding the perceived lack of direction within the Congress party. He articulated his inability to endorse “anti-Sanatana” slogans or denigrate the nation’s wealth creators. Consequently, he declared his resignation from all party roles and primary membership.

He further remarked and I quote “While we may not be in power currently, there were opportunities to effectively present our manifesto and policies. Unfortunately, this aspect was lacking at all levels of the party.”

Vallabh, who contested the Congress in the recent Rajasthan assembly elections and the 2019 Jharkhand assembly polls, also mentioned that there’s a perception that the party only serves a specific religion.

Vallabh additionally noted that in recent years, the party has fallen short in meeting the expectations of ‘New India’.

He emphasized the loss of grassroots connection as a critical factor in failing to understand what ‘New India’ demands from the party.

Additionally, he expressed disappointment over the leadership’s decision to skip the Ram Temple ceremony, describing it as shocking and upsetting.

Despite his intellectual prowess and popular TV debate with BJP’s Sambit Patra on the Indian economy, Vallabh faced electoral setbacks in both instances.

In 2022, Vallabh publicly criticized Shashi Tharoor’s potential bid for AICC president, pointing out Tharoor’s involvement in a letter sent to Sonia Gandhi by a group of party leaders in 2020, advocating for substantial reforms within the party.

Notably, another Congress spokesperson, and former social media chief of the party, Rohan Gupta has resigned from the party in March citing “harassment and character assassination” by unnamed leaders in the party.

He was selected as a candidate of Ahmedabad East Lok Sabha election. He opted out of the race citing his father’s health conditions.

In a letter to the party president Mallikarjun Kharge, Mr. Gupta had said that despite his best efforts to work for the party, his was “constantly humiliated” and a senior leader of the party in the communication wing even indulged in his “character assassination”.
