Mumbai: Bombay High Court grants bail to former Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh in corruption case being probed by Central Bureau of Investigation. The HC granted him bail on furnishing surety of ā¹1 lakh. The order will be effective after 10 days to enable CBI to approach the SC.
A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act regarding illegal gratification from bar owners and corruption in police transfers and posting in Maharashtra was filed against Anil Deshmukh.
The order on the plea last week was reserved by Justice M S Karnik after both sides completed their arguments. Today Justice M S Karnik pronounced the order.
Earlier, The Bombay HC in the Money Laundering case had already granted bail to the former minister. Enforcement Directorate was probing the case. The NCP leader remained incarcerated only in the CBI case against him.
Deshmukh asserted that the CBI’s primary witness, dismissed Mumbai police officer Sachin Waze (an approver), was unreliable by citing the Bombay High Court ruling. He cited Waze’s changing answers before the state government-appointed Commission in the case, Justice K U Chandiwal.

Deshmukh was labelled a flight risk by the CBI, which was commanded by ASG Anil Singh, and an attempt was made to differentiate between the ED and CBI cases. He claimed that there was sufficient evidence against Deshmukh and that Waze had been named as an approver in the case.
After the Special CBI Court rejected his bail plea last month, Anil Deshmukh approached Bombay HC. The Court observed that Sachin Waze’s statements played a very important role. The court said admissibility would be a matter of trial.
On November 2, 2021, Anil Deshmukh was arrested by Enforcement Directorate. Before arresting him ED interrogated him for nearly 12 hours and was subsequently arrested in the present case by the CBI.
