Cyclone Remal: Nearly 15,000 Houses Damaged, 2 Dead

Cyclone Remal wreaked havoc in West Bengal after making landfall between the state and Bangladesh on Sunday night, resulting in two deaths. One person was killed when a wall collapsed in Kolkata’s Bibi Bagan, while an 80-year-old woman died after a tree fell on her in Mousuni island, South 24 Parganas district. Flight operations at Kolkata airport, which were suspended on Sunday noon, have now resumed.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Remal has weakened into a “cyclonic storm” and is expected to further weaken during the day. Authorities evacuated over 1 lakh people from vulnerable areas in West Bengal. A senior state government official reported that Cyclone Remal damaged at least 15,000 houses across 24 blocks and 79 municipal wards, primarily in the southern coastal regions. Currently, 77,288 people remain in 1,438 safe shelters, down from the initially evacuated 2,07,060 individuals.
