Deepfakes Row: Government To Aid Citizens In Filing FIRs For IT Rule Violations

The Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, stated that social media platforms have been given a seven-day deadline to align their terms of use with the IT rules. “There will be zero tolerance for the violation of IT rules,” he announced.

Furthermore, the Union government will empower citizens to file First Information Reports (FIRs) against social media platforms found in violation of IT rules, as disclosed by Chandrasekhar on Friday. If individuals come across objectionable or misleading content, including deepfakes, on social media, they can now report it through a specialized platform developed by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).

Chandrasekhar explained, “MeitY will facilitate users in easily reporting IT rule violations and guide them through the process of filing FIRs.” This announcement came following a meeting between the minister and representatives of various social media platforms.
