Delhiโ€™s Air Quality Remains โ€˜Very Poorโ€™ As Winter Knocks On National Capital

New Delhi:  The onset of winter and deteriorated air quality meant that the national capital was seen covered in a layer of smog this morning.

The Lodhi Road and Akshardham area were reported to have visible smoke and fog. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in the national capital was recorded at 332, which comes under the โ€˜very poorโ€™ category this morning as per the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR) records.

Earlier on November 29, the air quality in the national capital continued to remain in the โ€˜very poorโ€™ category as the SAFAR recorded Delhiโ€™s Air Quality Index (AQI) at 346 on Tuesday morning.

On Monday, the SAFAR recorded Delhiโ€™s AQI at 317.

At the Delhi University area, on Monday, the air quality was recorded โ€˜very poorโ€™ with the presence of PM 2.5 in the air recorded at 371, whereas the Pusa area recorded it at 341.

In its latest forecast, the SAFAR recorded the quality of air in Dhirpur as โ€˜severeโ€™ as the AQI here reached 460. Noida, also saw the air quality in the โ€˜severeโ€™ category as the AQI rose to 438 today.

Meanwhile, Lodhi Road and Mathura Road also experienced โ€˜very poorโ€™ air quality with AQI at 306 and 344, respectively.

Air Quality Index is a tool for effectively communicating air quality status to people in terms that are easy to understand. It transforms complex air quality data of various pollutants into a single number (index value), nomenclature and colour.

The Air Quality Index from 0 to 100 is considered as good, while from 100 to 200 it is moderate, from 200 to 300 it is poor, and from 300 to 400 it is said to be very poor and from 400 to 500 or above it is considered as severe.

UN Secretary-General Antรณnio Guterres has welcomed the decision by the Government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to investigate recent deadly attacks allegedly committed by the M23 armed group.

Mr. Guterres has strongly condemned the attacks, which occurred on 29 and 30 November in the villages of Kishishe and Bambo, located in Rutshuru territory, North Kivu province, in the volatile eastern part of the country

At least 131 civilians were killed, including 17 women and 12 children, and eight others were injured.

Support for investigations

โ€œThe Secretary-General expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wishes a swift recovery to the injured,โ€ UN Spokesperson Stรฉphane Dujarric said in a statement on Friday.

โ€œHe welcomes the decision of the Congolese authorities to investigate these incidents with a view to bringing those found responsible to justice.โ€

Meanwhile, the UNโ€™s human rights office in the DRC, and its peacekeeping operation there, MONUSCO, will continue to support the Government in these efforts.

End hostilities now

โ€œThe Secretary-General urges the M23 and all other armed groups immediately cease hostilities and disarm unconditionally,โ€ the statement continued.

Mr. Guterres also called on all parties to facilitate humanitarian access to affected communities and to ensure the protection of civilians and respect for international humanitarian law.

He also underlined the UNโ€™s ongoing commitment to support the Congolese Government and people in their efforts to bring about peace and stability in the east of the country.

The attacks are the latest in a series of violence inflicted on civilians by armed groups in eastern DRC.

MONUSCO chief Bintou Keita briefed the UN Security Council in New York on Friday.

She told ambassadors that the security situation in eastern DRC โ€œhas deteriorated dramaticallyโ€ in the past weeks.
