Dhaka:  Unidentified miscreants vandalised the idol of a deity at a Hindu temple in Bangladeshโ€™s Jhenaidah, prompting police to launch a manhunt for the vandals, local media reported.

Authorities of the Kali temple in Dautiya village found the idol broken into pieces on Friday morning, news portal bdnews24.com quoted Sukumar Kunda, president of the temple committee as saying. According to Amit Kumar Burman, the districtโ€™s Assistant Superintendent of Police, a case had been lodged and investigations began on Thursday.

Sukumar said miscreants broke into the temple under the cover of night and vandalised the idol. The idolโ€™s head was found dumped on the road half a kilometre away from the temple, according to bdnews24.com.
This incident came a day after the 10-day annual Durga Puja festivities in Bangladesh came to an end with the immersion of idols on the auspicious day of Vijayadashami or Dusshera.

This is not the first incident of vandalism in a temple. On March 17, this year, the ISKCON Radhakanta Jeev temple in Dhaka was vandalized and idols were taken away. Several devotees also were also reportedly beaten up by the vandals.

Amani Krishna Das, the public relations officer of ISKCON temple, told ANI: โ€œMore than 200 terrorists led by Haji Shafiullah attacked, vandalized and looted the ISKCON Radhakanta temple at 222, Lal Mohan Saha Street in Wari.โ€

โ€œThe miscreants attempted to break the security wall of the temple,โ€ the ISKON official said.
On October 16, in 2021, a temple in Noakhali city in Bangladesh was vandalised and a devotee was killed by a mob, ISKON officials said.

Chinaโ€™s Moderate Stance On Russia Is Probably To Ukraineโ€™s Advantage

ANI
China-Russia

The lukewarm support from China has left Russia President Vladimir Putin in a difficult spot as the special military operation, which began in February, approaches the seven-month mark, and it could benefit Ukraine.

Beijing:  The lukewarm support from China has left Russian President Vladimir Putin in a difficult spot as the special military operation, which began in February, approaches the seven-month mark, and it could benefit Ukraine.

Chinaโ€™s abstaining on the UN Security Council resolution over the condemnation of referendums could be considered a success by Putin, but the Chinese representativeโ€™s subsequent statements donโ€™t indicate that Beijing would recognize the annexations, Asia Times reported. Chinaโ€™s stand on annexation remains ambiguous. It had somehow stopped short of condemning Russia. Still, at the same time, China has not taken a U-turn on its long-established position on the sanctity of the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Earlier, on October 2, Chinaโ€™s state-owned Global Times, in its report put the blame for the crisis squarely on the US. But it also said that in the case of nuclear war, no security would be given to anyone, even not for Ukraine.

This report came after the news came out that nuclear weapons could be used by Russia in Ukraine.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi recently met with the EUโ€™s high representative for foreign affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell. Wang noted Chinaโ€™s concerns about the negative spillover effects of the conflict and its support for EU mediation efforts.

Even, a week earlier, Chinese President Xi Jinping met Kazakhstanโ€™s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. With his meeting, Xi sent a clear message of Chinaโ€™s โ€œstrong support to Kazakhstan in protecting its independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.โ€

Kazakhstan is a country with a large ethnic Russian population and justifiable fears of Russian interference but now has the support of the Chinese government, according to Asia Times.

Much like Chinaโ€™s abstention from the vote in the UN Security Council, these actions leave a lot of ambiguity in Bejingโ€™s position. But if all the actions are taken together then China will definitely fall on another side of the line from Russia as it indicates no nuclear escalation and no recognition of the recent annexations.

This limits Russiaโ€™s options and explains its desperate move on trying to create a situation which might lead to some negotiable deal with Ukraine.

Beijingโ€™s ambiguity also reveals some points of Chinaโ€™s game as Putinโ€™s loss would also be a defeat for Chinese President Xi who is seeking to secure an unprecedented third term as Chinaโ€™s leader at the congress of the Chinese Communist party later this month, reported Asia Times.

China benefits from the increasing asymmetry of its relationship with Russia, with Putin more and more in the role of a junior, rather than equal, partner. This means that the ambiguity in Chinaโ€™s position is unlikely to come to an end either any time soon.
