Two weeks before the Maharashtra Assembly elections, the poll panel has ordered the transfer of Maharashtra DGP Rashmi Shukla, according to reports.
The Opposition MVA had alleged that the senior IPS officer was biased towards the ruling Mahayuti alliance and that fair polls wouldn’t be possible if she was the state police chief.
The ECI has directed Chief Secretary Sujata Saunik to hand over Ms Shukla’s charge to the seniormost IPS officer with immediate effect and send a panel of three names by tomorrow for selection of the next DGP.
The opposition had claimed Shukla illegally tapped the phones of opposition leaders on the directions of Devendra Fadnavis.
Mumbai’s current commissioner, Vivek Phansalkar, is most likely to take charge as the state’s interim DGP.
Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole has appreciated the ECI’s decision to change the DGP and appealed the ECI to ensure that Shukla is not appointed to any other position.
