How Is the NHRC Chief Appointed?
A former chief justice of India or a retired judge of the apex Court is appointed as NHRC chairperson by the President on the selection committee’s recommendation. Former CJIs HL Dattu and KG Balakrishnan have been at the helm of the rights body in the past. The Prime Minister leads the committee that selects the NHRC chief, and the committee also includes the Lok Sabha Speaker, the Home Minister, and the deputy chairperson of the Rajya Sabha.
Days ago, former CJI DY Chandrachud’s name was making the rounds on social media for the panel’s chief. However, Chandrachud termed the reports as “untrue”. “This is untrue. Presently, I am enjoying my retired life,” The CJI said.
