Germany’s Calls To Indian Students

As the US shows uncertainty over student visas, Germany has called on Indian students to study in its universities. Germany has said that they are ā€œnot erratic and volatileā€ and that it promises a secure academic environment.

The German Embassy in India has reported of a 35 percent increase in applications to universities in Germany from India. This is just over the last few months. This reflects Indian students’ growing interests in Germany’s educational system.

German Ambassador Praises Germany’s Education

German Ambassador Dr Philipp Ackermann spoke at a press conference in New Delhi on Tuesday. He said, “In the context of the difficulties Indian students face in other countries, we have seen a sharp rise in interest for German universities and research institutions. Applications have increased by over 35 per cent in the last couple of months.”

At present about 50,000 students from India are studying in Germany. This makes the country of Germany one of the top five study destinations for Indian students. This is after the US, Canada, the UK and Australia.

“We are a very reliable partner. When it comes to studying or researching in Germany, we don’t check your social media before you arrive,” Ackermann then said. This remark seemed to be on the rising scrutiny of western nations, as he assured Indian students about Germany’s system.

“We believe education is a public good, not a business opportunity,” he added.

These remarks came whilst the US administration’s crackdown on foreign students in the US. The Trump administration has ordered US embassies around the earth to stop scheduling appointments. US’s government plans to expand social media vetting of foreign student applicants.

Dr Katja Lasch is the Director of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) Regional Office in New Delhi. She was also present there.

She said, “Most public universities in Germany do not work with agents. Our system is transparent and accessible. Students can get free counselling from DAAD and German university liaison offices in India.”
